Fine reproduction of the Bellen Map.This map is carefully depicts defensive works and fortifications. Also shown are safe anchorages and soundings around the island. This map may well have served the French in planning their successful invasion in 1784.
Many of the roads shown circling the island along the coast are gone today, either owing to erosion and land loss on the coast or overgrown from neglect. Many inland roads are today equally obscure. Several roads have been located and followed during past projects. Each leads to former sugar factories or estate ruins.
